The county Clare village of Kildysart, also known as Killadysert, is on the north bank of the Shannon Estuary. Although it held minor meetings prior to 1904, the meeting staged on Tuesday 12th July 1904 was widely reported in the newspapers. There were a number of reasons why the races did not flourish, not least because of the inaccessible course just on the edge of the village, but the meeting also clashed with Maze races. However, a good card was arranged, opening with the Ennis Plate which saw Mr Green’s Liberty Bell defeat Elva and Castor. The Lackinashana Plate over a mile and a half with hurdles was won by Stephanie II and the feature Kildysart Plate went to the odds on favourite Rouge Gagne. At a meeting of the National Hunt Committee in 1904 concerns were raised about safety issues at flat race meetings. There had been a significant increase in flat races, and decrease in steeplechases, which led the Committee to suggest the imposition of minimum prize money for flat races and the inspection of flat race courses. Kildysart was inspected by newly appointed Irish Turf Club inspectors in March 1905 and the licence was withdrawn due to the poor condition of the course so that the meeting held on Tuesday 12th July 1904 was the last to be staged at the course. |
